Students win big at regional agricultural economics competition

CLEMSON — A team of eight Clemson undergraduate students upset traditional powers University of Florida, University of Kentucky and Purdue University on the way to Clemson’s strongest showing ever at the annual Southern Agricultural Economics Association Undergraduate Quiz Bowl.
Carl Womble, a junior agribusiness major from Hampton, was part of a team that took first place. Zachary Sharp, junior agribusiness major from York, and Cody White, sophomore agribusiness major from Abbeville, finished third and fourth, respectively.
Other Clemson team members included English Ratliff, Summerville; McCauley Frierson, Travelers Rest; Victoria Rizer, Lodge; Matthew McCaskill, Bethune; and Carson Buzhart, Saluda.
The quiz bowl tests knowledge about macroeconomics, microeconomics, agribusiness and finance, and natural resources. The Clemson team competed against 120 students from 19 schools and universities from across the U.S.
This was only the second time in the past 10 years that Clemson students have participated in the quiz bowl.
“I am very proud of our success, especially since our students have so little experience competing at this event. Our goal now is to have a strong showing at the national meetings,” said Michael Vassalos, agribusiness professor and faculty advisor.
The 2015 National Agricultural & Applied Economics Association annual meeting will take place July 26–28 in San Francisco.
